I am a certified podcast-obsessed fat babe. When I was fifteen years old I used to engage in the double-whammy of problematic behaviours by tanning for hours at a time in the Queensland sun in the middle of summer whilst listening to true crime podcasts. Luckily I have evolved beyond this, however, I will NEVER evolve beyond my podcast obsession. I have now had years to curate a podcast collection that reflects my values, one of which is my belief that fat babes deserve EVERYTHING that skinny babes have. If you are in the same boat as me, maybe these podcasts will be for you too.

Maintenance Phase

Michael Hobbes and Aubrey Gordon (who you may know as Your Fat Friend) debunk diet, weight loss, and wellness myths in this meticulously researched podcast. Somehow, the pair manage to balance their positions as self-proclaimed Methodology Queens with humour, empathy, and fat joy, and every episode is injected with the secret sauce that comes from two genuine friends discussing their passions. From a personal position, I cannot recommend this podcast enough. Nothing has helped me more on my journey to accepting and loving my body than having Michael and Aubrey completely decimate my anti-fat beliefs about myself by correcting the myths held in the popular imagination.

Episodes to start with:

  • Zombie Statistics Spectacular
  • “Super Size Me”
  • Is Being Fat Bad For You?

Faternise

In Faternise, journalist and fat activist Demi Lynch chats with people in the plus size community about what it’s like to be fat in Australia today. Her conversations cover frustrations, issues, and taboos, and are deeply honest and human. Even when she is discussing the struggles of being fat, Demi and her guests never make you feel like the state of the world is bleak – instead, you feel like you are sitting in your bedroom with friends bitching and laughing about your lives. Listening to Faternise makes you feel seen and heard, and for many (including me), it was the first time I had heard many of these topics discussed. It makes you feel less alone.

Episodes to start with:

  • City Chic Rant 2.0
  • Jetstar, Qantas, And Air New Zealand - Get Your Sh*t Together! (The guest on this episode is our wonderful founder Holly!)
  • Asking A Porn Star How To Have Fat Sex

Dieticians Unplugged Podcast

Dieticians Aaron Flores and Glenys Oyston are trying to shift the conversation away from weight loss and counting calories and towards health at every size (HAES). While the pair are currently taking a break from the podcast, there are over eighty episodes in the back-catalogue for your listening delight. Their episodes are informative, probing, and empathetic, and the topics covered are selected because Aaron and Glenys have encountered them in their practice. It has been incredibly gratifying for me to listen to Dieticians Unplugged and hear healthcare professionals speaking without the anti-fat bias so often infused in that field.

Episodes to start with:

  • The Fear of Weight Gain
  • Dismantling Diet Culture with Christy Harrison
  • Will I Ever Stop Gaining Weight?

She’s All Fat: A Fat Positive Podcast

Host Sophie Carter-Kahn feels like your best friend in this awesome podcast. Like Dieticians Unplugged, this podcast is also on a break, but there are over ninety episodes in the back-catalogue, so there is still plenty of fun to be had! Sophie talks current events, popular culture, and the intersections between fatness and feminism with her wonderful guests, whose unique experiences are all united under the umbrella of fatness. If you’re interested in social justice issues such as feminism, colonialism, queerness, reproductive justice, and racism, this podcast is absolutely for you – Sophie effortlessly weaves threads between these topics and fatness to highlight that they have always been connected. There really is something for everyone over at She’s All Fat, and I’ve loved learning about topics and hearing people’s experiences that I never would have otherwise.

Episodes to start with:

  • How to be Fat, Ethical, and HOT
  • HAIRSPRAY!
  • Fat Gamers UNITE!
